The Shawl is one of Mamet's least well known and shortest stage plays. Running 37 minutes, and played as a double bill in Greenwich with the final run of Sexual Perversity in Chicago, it tells the story of a clairvoyant, John, and his relationship with Charles and how it is affected by the arrival of Miss A, a recently bereaved woman who wants to decide whether or not to contest her mother's will.

In perhaps the least-stagey and most touching production by Benet Catty Productions, The Shawl struggled to find an audience for much of its two week run at a remote and under-resourced Fringe theatre, but still managed to receive two positive notices, and the plaudits of a public who got a rare chance to see two such contrasting plays by America's foremost playwright.

Benet continues to rate it amongst his favourite shows, and hopes one day to be able to revive it in order to give it the chance to be enjoyed by a wider audience.
